A Look Inside: Mental Illness and Our Criminal Justice System
Time: Tuesday, February 8, 3 – 4:30pm
Sponsored by the Milwaukee Mental Health Task Force and Milwaukee Turners.
People with mental health concerns are vastly overrepresented in our criminal justice system. Even worse, these jails and prisons are considered the de facto treatment facilities for those who have been marginalized and turned away from receiving care in the community. This three-part series, “A Look Inside: Mental Illness and the Criminal Justice System” will use the Sequential Intercept Model to identify gaps and opportunities to divert people with mental illness and link them to services.
At the February 8th program, subject matter experts will describe the first contacts with the legal system. The program will highlight ways in which change can occur and serve as a call to action to help in improving outcomes for those most in need of our assistance.
